A Liverpool fan was beaten and killed in Italy where he was trying to watch his team play a Champions League match.

Philip Dooley, 51, from Liverpool, was hit by a car in Bergamo in the early hours of Tuesday morning, Merseyside Police said.

Police said officers had informed Mr Dooley's next of kin in Merseyside and were assisting police in Italy.

Two men who witnessed the incident are also assisting the Italian police in their investigation.

According to Liverpool FC, the lifelong Liverpool fan had travelled to Italy for Tuesday's match against AC Milan.

Liverpool players wore black armbands to honour Mr Dooley, while representatives from both teams laid flowers on the pitch that would have been his seat at the Champions League match.

The club posted on X: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of our fan Philip Dooley following a road accident in Bergamo.

“The thoughts and prayers of everyone associated with the club are with Philip’s family, friends and fellow fans during this extremely difficult time.”

A club spokesman added: “Our staff in Milan are working with local police and the consulate and continue to support other fans affected by this devastating incident.”

“Rest in peace, Philip.”
