APS has stated that the student did not express any intent to harm himself or others. They further said that the presence of weapons on campus is a serious violation of school policy. In a letter to parents, Volcano Vista Principal Melissa Sedillo said: “I would like to thank the Volcano Vista staff and the Albuquerque Public Schools Police for their quick response. They immediately intervened, confiscated the firearms and arrested the student. I am also grateful to the Albuquerque Police Department and the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office for their assistance.”

Principal Sedillio continued: “I am grateful to the person who alerted us to the situation. It is critical for everyone to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or concerns promptly.”

Authorities were investigating a separate social media threat against Volcano Vista unrelated to the armed student. The social media threat was found to be implausible. However, as a precaution, there will be an increased presence of Albuquerque Public Schools (APS) police and Albuquerque police on campus throughout the week.
