Kappy's Subs in Maitland won't close, but secures new lease: report

Kappy's Subs, a popular Maitland diner that has been part of the community for 57 years, announced Tuesday morning that it had reached a last-minute lease agreement and would not be closing permanently.

“Thank you all for your support. We truly could not have saved Kappy's without the love of our community,” Kappy's Subs said in a Facebook post that included a link to an Orlando Sentinel article that broke the news.

“We will reopen on Monday, September 23rd.”

Details on how the last-minute deal came about were not immediately available. FOX 35 has reached out to Kappy's Subs and its owners for comment and more information.

The community had more than gathered around Kappy's Subs, which serves cheesesteaks, deli subs, hot dogs and fries, ahead of its scheduled last day of business.

A little over a week ago, Kappy's Subs announced on a Facebook page that it would have to close after half a century in business because it could not reach an agreement with its new landlord.

“It has been an absolute honor for me and my family to serve this community for the past 57 years. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has walked through our doors during our time of service and will miss being able to serve you all every day,” wrote Chef Adam Milsom.

“Closing Kappy's is the hardest thing I've ever had to do in my life and I've been moved to tears several times in the last few days. Believe me, this is not how we want to go out and it's as sudden a surprise to us as it is to everyone else.”
