Cynthia Mitchell was awakened by an unusual noise last Monday morning.

“Pop, pop, pop, pop. My son thought it was gunshots. He woke me up, so I went outside and looked on the porch to see if I could see anything. I saw the orange glow, I saw fire,” Mitchell said. Candace McCowan from Channel 2.

She thought the bang was just the beginning of a fire that engulfed the house on Cohassett Lane on September 9.

It was only hours later that she learned that the two residents of the house, Brittany Hall and Derris Woods, had died.

And now investigators claim that they were not killed by fire, but by gunshots.

LATEST STORIES:

Neighbors didn't think much about the fire until they saw a sign in the front yard of the burned-out house saying that Georgia Arson Control was offering a reward of up to $10,000.

That's when they started to worry.

“Because of the sign out there in the yard that says arson and the homicide detective, it had to be more than just fire,” Mitchell said.

Detectives from DeKalb County Police said they were able to quickly identify the suspect, who was later arrested in Mississippi.

The news left Mitchell with mixed feelings.

“I couldn't sleep because I didn't know what was going on. I'm so glad to hear someone was arrested so maybe I can sleep tonight,” Mitchell said. “It's still scary. It's scary.”

Investigators have not released the suspect's name or said what led to the murders.
