Broome County Sheriff's Office arrests Georgia murder suspect

The Broome County Sheriff's Office Warrant Division successfully arrested a fugitive wanted for murder in Georgia. Dawensley Astrel, a 21-year-old Binghamton resident, was taken into custody on Monday, September 16, following a coordinated action by law enforcement.

The arrest was made based on information received by Broome County Sheriff's Office deputies last week indicating that Astrel had an outstanding warrant for his arrest in Georgia for murder. Further investigation revealed that he lived in the Binghamton area and was a student at Broome Community College.

Based on this information, the BCSO team worked with SUNY Broome Campus Safety to conduct the arrest of Astrel without incident. The operation culminated on Monday, September 16, 2024, when Astrel was arrested on the college campus. He is now in custody and is scheduled to be extradited by Georgia law enforcement to face the pending charges against him.

In response to this development, SUNY Broome released a statement on behalf of the college confirming that the Bureau of Public Safety worked closely with the Sheriff's Office to take Astrel into custody. In addition, the college stated that Astrel is currently enrolled on a part-time basis.

In addition, SUNY Broome emphasized that college operations were not impacted and at no time was there any threat to students or staff. The college's prompt cooperation with law enforcement and commitment to the safety and well-being of the campus community were paramount in successfully managing the situation.

Sheriff Fred Akshar praised the diligent efforts of the Warrant Division to bring the wanted man to justice, stating: “Further outstanding police work by our warrant division in bringing this wanted individual to justice.” He also thanked the SUNY Broome campus security team for their invaluable cooperation in safely removing the fugitive from campus.
