Man charged with alleged road rage in Gadsden

An Oxford man is in the Etowah County Jail on suspicion of shooting a woman during a road rage incident in Gadsden on Sept. 17.

Tommy Junior Smith, 39, is charged with first-degree assault and shooting at an occupied vehicle.

According to a press release on the Gadsden Police Department's Facebook page, officers responded to reports of a shooting at the intersection of Rainbow Drive and Lakewood Drive around 3:17 p.m.

Officers and medical personnel found a woman with a gunshot wound. While paramedics began treating the woman, whose injuries were not life-threatening, officers began investigating the incident.

They found that a man had fired shots from his vehicle, a Jeep truck, before fleeing toward Interstate 759, the news release said.

Local law enforcement was alerted and Rainbow City Police spotted the vehicle, stopped it and arrested Smith.

Gadsden police called it an “isolated incident of road rage” and thanked Rainbow City, Attalla and Southside police, as well as the Etowah County Sheriff's Office and Drug Enforcement Unit for their assistance.
