Donald Trump rally: Strict security measures were in place on the day of the event in Nassau County in Uniondale

NASSAU COUNTY, Long Island (WABC) — Just days after the suspected second assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump in Florida over the weekend, the Republican presidential candidate will hold a campaign rally in Nassau County.

The former president spent the night at Trump Tower under increased Secret Service protection ahead of Wednesday's 7 p.m. rally at Nassau Coliseum.

The Nassau Coliseum parking lot will be closed until 8:00 a.m. Wednesday morning due to security checks.

Police have evicted several vendors and people who tried to camp overnight.

“Every inch of the property within that perimeter and the perimeter is as big as we need it to be. We're going to make sure everything is safe and swept. We're going to have aircraft over the property upon arrival and during the event and we're also going to have our sniffer dogs out in the wooded areas,” said Nassau County Police Chief Patrick Ryder.

When the parking lot opens on Wednesday morning, only ticketed visitors will be allowed in. Overflow parking is available in Eisenhower Park.

More than 60,000 tickets have been requested for the rally. The facility has only 16,000 seats, the rest will watch the event on large outdoor screens in what is described as a tailgate party-style experience.

People were queuing long before the parking lot opened at 8:00 a.m.

The Hempstead Turnpike is expected to remain open throughout the day, but motorists and residents should expect heavier than usual traffic starting at 3 p.m.

The heaviest traffic is expected near the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum between Hempstead Turnpike, Charles Lindbergh Boulevard, Earle Ovington Boulevard and Glen Curtiss Boulevard.

Anyone who has nothing to do in the area is asked to stay away from Wednesday afternoon.

Several protests are planned in a designated “Free Speech Zone” on the sidewalk along Hempstead Turnpike, just west of the main entrance.

Lectures at Hofstra University scheduled after 1:00 p.m. will be taught remotely.

Classes at Nassau Community College will be cancelled starting at 2 p.m.

In the Uniondale Union Free School District, classes will end earlier. High schools will begin at 11:45 a.m., middle schools at 12:25 p.m. and elementary schools at 1:05 p.m.

Kellenberg High School switched to virtual classes and canceled all activities for Wednesday.

The following items may not be brought to the rally:

Drones, aerosols, alcohol, devices, backpacks or roll-up bags, no bag larger than 12 x 14 x 5 and it must be clear, balloons, balls, poles, sticks, banners, signs, posters, chairs, coolers, e-cigarettes, firearms, glass, thermal containers, air horns, whistles and megaphones.
