911 calls released after fatal plane crash in Fairview

FAIRVIEW, Oregon (KPTV) – The 911 calls made just moments after the plane crash in Fairview last month have been released.

The accident occurred near Troutdale Airport at 10:20 a.m. on Saturday, August 31. The Cessna 421C crashed into a row of townhouses on Heartwood Circle, killing three people.

The first call to 911 came from someone who witnessed the plane crash.

“I'm kayaking on Fairview Lake, we're near 223rd and Fairview, and a plane just crashed and exploded. I thought he was doing a stunt and then (beep) he crashed and exploded.”

During the crash, the plane struck power lines, leaving approximately 22,000 PGE customers without power for several hours.

Many people called 911 and said they saw flames shooting into the sky.

“I think a plane just crashed. It's on fire, power lines are down. It was a huge red fireball. My blinds were closed and I could see the fireball and I could hear the crash and I saw the crash. But I think it's a plane. It was a huge red fireball and I don't know if the plane was on fire.”

The three people killed in the crash were identified as 75-year-old Barbara J. MacDonald of Fairview (resident), 73-year-old Michael C. Busher of Beavercreek (pilot), and 79-year-old Jacqueline K. Whitford of Glendale, Arizona (flight instructor).

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash. They are reviewing flight data, the pilot's history and the aircraft's maintenance records. According to the NTSB, it could take up to 18 months before they get answers.
