Woman arrested for abandoning toddler in Monroe, police say

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Police have arrested a woman accused of abandoning one of her toddler children in Monroe, Michigan.

According to the Monroe Department of Public Safety, officials plan to file child abandonment charges against a 26-year-old woman, whose name was not released.

Officials said the woman, from the Downriver area, came to Monroe with her 2-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter. She met a Monroe resident who allowed her to stay with him for a few days.

The boyfriend and witnesses told police the 26-year-old mother of two left with her son on Tuesday, leaving her daughter behind. Investigators eventually found she was at a hotel near the Detroit airport. Romulus police arrested her and took her back to Monroe, where she was taken to jail.

According to police, she admitted to investigators that she knowingly left her daughter with strangers.

The authorities took protective custody of the girl and eventually the woman's two children were reunited with them and returned to their families.

The agency said the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services assisted in the situation and will continue to investigate the case.
