No shooting as 'active threat' investigation continues at Montgomery VA Hospital

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – The Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System (CAVHCS) is changing the classification of a situation at the Montgomery VA Hospital on Perry Hill Road from an “active shooter investigation” to an “active threat investigation.” CAVHCS continues to ask the public to avoid the hospital while the investigation continues.

Chip Hill, Mayor Steven Reed's chief of staff, said police leadership confirmed to him that “no one was found on scene with a weapon. No one is injured. No one was shot,” adding, “MPD is assisting its federal colleagues who are still investigating initial reports.”

CAVHCS released a statement around 10:55 a.m. saying, “Police and VA Police are actively responding to the situation and all hospital entrances are temporarily closed.” All visitors, patients and CAVHCS staff are asked to avoid the area until further notice.

“We are working closely with local authorities to ensure the safety of everyone on campus,” said Valerie Russell, deputy director of CAVHCS. “We will provide updates as more information becomes available.”

This is an evolving situation, please check back often for updates.

Individuals with scheduled appointments or urgent needs are asked to contact the hospital by phone to reschedule or seek services from other VA facilities.
