LATEST: 25 injured in tractor crash in Chippewa County; no fatalities | Chippewa Valley News

12:20 PM UPDATE: We receive further information about the tractor rollover with numerous injuries in Chippewa County.

Deputy Chief Corey Jeffers of the Chippewa Fire District said two hay wagons being pulled by a tractor overturned Wednesday morning. Children and adults were inside. As News 18 reported, a group of 4,000 and 5,000-year-old students from St. Mark Lutheran School in Eau Claire were on a school field trip.

When emergency responders arrived on the scene, they found that there were at least 30 patients. They immediately initiated mass casualty protocol, which meant calling the emergency services and hospitals in the area and putting them on alert.

25 people had to be taken to local hospitals. It is unclear how many of them were children and how many were adults. Jeffers has also not yet been able to determine the nature of the injuries.

Jeffers said all the children have been reunited with their families.

Chippewa County Sheriff Travis Hakes confirmed there were no fatalities.

12:05 PM UPDATE: The News 18 reporter says the accident scene is slowly emptying. He says emergency responders are leaving the scene.

Parents who were waiting for news also left the orchard.

News 18 is waiting to speak with officials.


11:50 a.m. UPDATE: News 18 can confirm that the children involved are children from St. Mark Lutheran Church and School in Eau Claire, according to a grandparent of one of the affected students.

According to their school calendar, a field trip to Bushel and a Peck was planned for Wednesday morning for the 4K and 5K students.


CHIPPEWA COUNTY (WQOW) – A developing situation in Chippewa County Wednesday morning.

A large emergency response is underway at Bushel and Peck Market, an apple orchard in Chippewa Falls.

A reporter from News 18 is currently on site. He saw several ambulances leaving the orchard. The Mayo Clinic helicopter was there and has now flown out a patient.

Our reporter says he can see from his drone's camera that a tractor-drawn cart has overturned.

We have reached out to the Chippewa County Sheriff's Office, Chippewa Fire Protection District and the Orchard for more information. We have not yet received a response.

More precise information, such as the number of injured and who was involved in the car crash, is not yet known.

The communications manager for the Eau Claire Area School District said no students from their district came to the orchard on a field trip today. The Chippewa Falls School District said no students from their district were there either.

Our reporter on site said that parents were waiting for information in front of the entrance.

According to the orchard's website, tours of the orchard, which include a covered wagon ride, are offered daily during the fall.
