Former Overton city secretary allegedly used city funds to purchase fuel

OVERTON, Texas (KLTV) – Overton police are charging a former city clerk with using a city gas card to purchase gas for personal use 20 times.

Katherine Marie McCandless, 53, of Overton, is charged with theft in a state prison. She was booked into the Rusk County Jail on $10,000 bail and released Tuesday.

According to a press release from the Overton Police Department, police were notified by the city of unauthorized fuel charges made using a city fuel credit card. The investigation revealed that McCandless, who was still employed by the city, used the card to purchase fuel for personal use, including 40 gallons of gasoline that she pumped into her recreational boat, according to the press release.

From June 5 to August 19, McCandless made 20 unauthorized withdrawals totaling $1,192.64.

“The employees of this city strive to be good stewards of your tax dollars,” said Police Chief Bryan Pool. “Any theft of your tax dollars will not be overlooked, condoned or tolerated.”
