RFK Jr. investigates incident involving dead whales on Cape Cod, he says

Former presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy said Saturday that he was being investigated by the National Marine Fisheries Service for allegedly sawing off the head of a dead whale in Hyannisport and bringing it home in 1994.

“This is about using our government as a weapon against the political opponents of the party in power. This is dangerous for our democracy, as my father already knew. Every American, Democrat or Republican, should be outraged by this,” Kennedy said during a campaign rally for Donald Trump in Glendale, Arizona.

According to its website, the National Marine Fisheries Service is an agency of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in the Department of Commerce.

Katherine Silverstein, a NOAA spokeswoman, told the Times that the federal agency does not typically comment on open investigations.

In August, the environmental group Center for Biological Diversity Action Fund sent a letter to NOAA calling for an investigation into Kennedy after a 2012 interview with his daughter resurfaced in Town and Country.

Then his daughter, Kick Kennedy, told the magazine that her father used a chainsaw to cut off the whale's head after hearing that the whale had washed up on Squaw Island. He tied it to the roof of the family minivan with a bungee cord to take it to Mount Kisco, New York, apparently for examination.

“Every time we accelerated on the highway, whale juice would run against the windows, and it was the most disgusting thing in the world,” Kick Kennedy told Town and Country in 2012. “We all had plastic bags with mouth holes cut out over our heads, and people on the highway would give us the middle finger, but that was just our normal everyday life.”

After the story gained attention on social media, the Center for Biological Diversity Action Fund stated in its letter to NOAA that it is illegal to possess any part of any dead or live animal protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act or the Endangered Species Act.

On August 23, Kennedy announced that he would suspend his presidential campaign and endorsed Republican candidate and former President Donald Trump.
