UEFA Champions League news: Pep Guardiola's team hosts Serie A champions at Etihad Stadium

Haaland and Manchester City fail against impressive Inter

Manchester City endured a frustrating night as Pep Guardiola's side began their UEFA Champions League campaign with a 0-0 draw at home to Inter Milan.

Simone Inzaghi's Serie A champions have proved to be a tough nut to crack, with Erling Haaland's bid to break Cristiano Ronaldo's record as the fastest player to score 100 goals for a club (in 105 games) still hanging in the balance.

The Norwegian has indeed been in outstanding form this season, but his 104th game in the Citizens' shirt was ultimately unsatisfactory and he remains stuck at 99 games, although the visitors deservedly secured a share of the spoils.

It could have been an even better night for the Nerazzurri, but they lacked the finishing touch to crown a series of excellent counterattacks, with Marcus Thuram, Matteo Darmian and former Manchester United midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan all wasting good opportunities.

City were beaten by Inter's excellent defence, with substitutes Phil Foden and Ilkay Gundogan coming closest to scoring for the hosts, while Kevin de Bruyne was forced off at half-time ahead of the weekend due to a worrying injury.

Next, Man City will focus on Sunday's top match at home against Arsenal. Inter will face neighbours AC Milan in Serie A.
