14-year-old boy attempted to steal car at gunpoint, arrested on NEISD elementary school campus, SAPD says

SAN ANTONIO — An armed 14-year-old boy attempted to steal a man's car before running away on foot, jumping a fence onto the grounds of a NEISD elementary school and being arrested, police and school officials said.

According to a preliminary report from the San Antonio Police Department, officers responded to a 911 call about a robbery in progress around 8:15 a.m. Wednesday morning in the 6600 block of Fairdale.

A 62-year-old man told police the boy pointed a gun at him and tried to steal his vehicle, the report said.

The man and the teenager were arguing over the gun when it went off. No one was injured, police said.

The boy then ran away with the gun while the man chased him and called 911.

When the man returned to his vehicle, the boy was inside, the report said.

The boy fled again on foot and ran toward East Terrell Hills Elementary School, where he jumped over a fence onto school grounds, school principal Ross McGlothlin said in a letter to parents.

While the police searched for the boy, the school was cordoned off.

NEISD police arrested the teenager, who is now charged with robbery and illegal carrying of a weapon.

The boy's gun was found off school property, outside the school fence, McGlothlin said in his letter.
