Man charged with seven crimes, including attempted capital crimes, after incident at McDonald's

OVERLAND PARK, Kansas (KCTV) – A 35-year-old man is facing multiple crimes, including attempted capital murder, following an incident at a McDonald's early Tuesday morning.

Sulif Wilkins, 34, of Leavenworth was arrested Tuesday and charged with seven felony counts after he approached a man with what appeared to be a semi-automatic weapon in the parking lot of a McDonald's near College Boulevard and Quivira Road, according to Overland Park police.

The employee ran back into the McDonald's and called police. When OPPD officers arrived, Wilkins reportedly began firing his weapon. Police said he continued firing until his weapon was either empty or jammed. He then dropped the weapon and was arrested.

Wilkins is charged with one count of attempted capital murder, two counts of aggravated robbery, illegal possession of a weapon and carrying a concealed weapon.

The 34-year-old felon was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison in October 2016 for his role in the murder of a 3-year-old boy who was killed in a drive-by shooting in Kansas City, Missouri. According to court records, Wilkins served four years of that sentence for manslaughter.

He is being held on $5 million bail in Johnson County, Kansas following Tuesday's incident at McDonald's. His first court appearance is scheduled for Thursday, September 19, at 1:30 p.m.

Police said no one was injured and nothing was stolen in the incident Tuesday morning. The call came in at 5:15 a.m. Tuesday when police received reports of an aggravated assault at College Boulevard and Oakmont Street.
