24-year-old charged with murder in shooting in New Jersey park

Authorities have charged a 24-year-old man with murder after he was involved in a shooting at an Orange park last week, Essex County District Attorney Theodore N. Stephens II said Wednesday.

Brandon Beasley, 24, has been charged with murder and weapons offenses in connection with a shooting that killed 28-year-old DeAndre Smith last Thursday in Metcalf Park on Valley Street.

Authorities said Smith was shot around 8:30 p.m. on September 12 and taken to University Hospital, where he died three days later, on September 15.

Beasley is being held at the Essex County Correctional Facility awaiting his first court date. His attorney could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
