2 people from Michigan are stranded in the Fiji Islands and $1 million is at stake

There could be worse places to be stranded. Two people from Michigan are stuck in the Fiji Islands, competing for $1 million on the latest season of “Survivor.”

“Survivor 47” premieres Wednesday, September 18 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS. The series will also stream on Paramount+. Jeff Probst returns as host.

Rachel Lamont of Dexter, Michigan, who now lives in Southfield, and Kyle Otswald of Cheboygan, Michigan, are two of this season's 18 new castaways.

Lamont is a 34-year-old graphic designer who was born in Thailand and lived there until she was 7, according to Entertainment Weekly. She says moving to a new country at a young age helped her prepare for “Survivor.”

“I didn't understand American culture,” she told EW. “I was nine years younger than her. I was forced from a young age to understand social dynamics in order to fit in, and I think I'm pretty good at it because of that.”

Lamont is married to her husband Derek. They have a dog, Eva, and a cat, Maeby.

Otswald is a 31-year-old construction worker. He told EW he was prepared for Survivor because he lives the van life.

“I spent over six years traveling around the country in a van that I built myself and was able to experience so many different environments, cultures and different social classes that I now feel comfortable and get along with almost everyone.”

He says he's done everything from eating dinner out of a dumpster to staying on million-dollar yachts.

Otswald told EW that his favorite hobbies are fatherhood, traveling and surfing.

The American version of “Survivor,” which premiered in 2000 and is now in its 47th season, is currently airing.
