More students and adults arrested in connection with August shooting near McLane High School

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Five students and two adults were arrested for their involvement in a shooting near McLane High School on August 21.

Four of the teenagers are students at McLane and one at Hoover High.

The shooting occurred around 3:40 p.m. in front of the AutoZone on the corner of Cedar and Clinton Avenue – about 30 minutes after school let out.

“We found no evidence that these weapons were brought into the school, and that's obviously an avenue we wanted to investigate,” said Michael Sasso, a detective with the Fresno County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators said a large group of students were standing outside the store when a fight broke out.

“A preliminary investigation revealed that a 15-year-old boy struck a teenager with a pistol and a 16-year-old student pulled out a pistol and fired shots as people left the scene,” Fresno County Sheriff John Zanoni said.

A nearby truck and a restaurant were hit by the gunfire, but no one was injured.

“We have come to the conclusion that this shooting itself had nothing to do with gang violence,” Zanoni said.

“Although there were people with gang affiliations involved, this was more of a personal dispute.”

About 30 minutes after the shooting, officers arrested the 16-year-old shooter, who was hiding in a nearby neighborhood.

“The next day, we identified a 15-year-old student at McCane High School who had taken a gun from one of the suspects to hide it and hid it in his apartment,” Zanoni explained.

“Detectives executed a search warrant and arrested the teenager, but did not find the weapon.”

After serving several search warrants, detectives seized the two pistols used in the shooting as well as four other firearms.

In the days and weeks following the shooting, investigators arrested three more students, as well as 43-year-old Jim Vue and 29-year-old Richie Vue.

Jim was arrested for illegal possession of weapons and Richie for possession of cocaine.

All students were placed in a juvenile detention center and face charges of possession of weapons or aiding and abetting possession of weapons.
