Giants 10-0 Orioles (September 17, 2024) Match Report

BALTIMORE – Blake Snell recorded 12 strikeouts and allowed just one hit in six innings to lead the San Francisco Giants past the struggling Baltimore Orioles 10-0 on Tuesday night.

The Orioles have lost seven of nine games and are four games behind the first-place Yankees in the AL East. Baltimore had a half-game lead on Sept. 5 before faltering and being beaten 46-18.

Colton Cowser had two of the Orioles' five hits in their most lopsided scoreless loss of the season.

“We struggled offensively,” said Orioles manager Brandon Hyde. “We had a rough night.”

In this game, the Giants got the only run they needed when Mike Yastrzemski drove the second pitch from Orioles starter Albert Suárez (8-6) over the right outfield wall. Yastrzemski hit an RBI single in the second inning after a sacrifice fly by Brett Wisely and Snell had no trouble protecting his lead.

“It feels good to score runs early and pitch with a lead,” Snell said. “You can be more aggressive.”

Snell (4-3) will have to play against Baltimore without several injured regular players. flashed the form This won him the 2023 NL Cy Young Award. The left-hander had at least two strikeouts in every inning except the fourth and made up for it by striking out everyone in the fifth inning.

“We were facing one of the better pitchers in the game and we didn't swing the bats well against him,” Hyde said.

Snell struck out All-Star Gunnar Henderson three times, most recently in the sixth inning, to cap off his 98-pitch masterpiece.

“Gunnar. Changeups. He just has trouble with them,” Snell said. “A lot of left-handers have that.”

Snell struck out two and the only hit he allowed was a solid single up the middle in the third inning by Emmanuel Rivera.

“I like how I felt mentally today,” Snell said.

Since returning from the injured list on July 9 after a groin strain, Snell is 4-0 with a 1.33 ERA and 105 strikeouts in 74 1/3 innings.

“The guy is unbelievable. He's at his best right now,” Yastrzemski said. “He's a special pitcher. It's pretty cool to see how dominant he can be.”

San Francisco turned the game into a crushing defeat with a six-run ninth inning against Craig Kimbrel, who had long ago lost his job as Baltimore's closer due to a lack of effectiveness.

The Giants ended a four-game losing streak at the start of their final away tour of the season.
