Three suspects identified in Houston burglary – two already out on bail; suspected getaway driver arrested at Taco Bell workplace

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – The three men accused of committing a burglary and allegedly shooting a police officer in Houston remain in custody as of Wednesday.

Authorities charged 35-year-old Raymond Perez, who is accused of shooting Officer Scott Durfee, with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault on an officer and unlawful carrying of a weapon.

At the time of the incident on Tuesday, Raymond Perez was free on bail on charges of illegal possession of a firearm and fleeing in a motor vehicle. He has yet to appear in court or before a hearing officer on the new charges. He is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.

Authorities said Michael Perez, 38, was also in the home during the break-in. Authorities charged him with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon. At the time of the crime, he was out on bail for possession of a controlled substance. During the probable cause hearing on Wednesday, a hearing officer did not set bail in his case.

Brian Garcia Chavez, 18, is charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon. Police accuse him of being the getaway driver. A hearing officer in probable cause court set his bail at $100,000.

It is not known whether Michael Perez and Raymond Perez are related.

Ben Bates said his 26-year-old daughter was home alone with her two young children on Tuesday morning when the doorbell rang. She said it appeared to be a food delivery person and although she had not placed an order recently, she believed they were at the wrong house so she opened the door to tell them.

Bates said both Perez men forced their way into the home and tied her hands with zip ties. Her children were in the room and witnessed the attack.

According to Bates, the men led the victim from room to room, looking for valuables.

“It’s unbelievable what can happen and how destroyed the house can be in just 10 minutes,” Bates said.

Before the men entered, the neighbor across the street said he noticed something suspicious and called 911. He said he heard the woman screaming and instructed emergency services to send someone urgently.

The police arrived on site in less than 10 minutes and entered the building.

According to officials, Raymond Perez shot Durfee in the leg. Emergency responders took Durfee to the hospital, where he was released.

Police arrested both Perez men at or near the scene. Chavez was arrested at the Taco Bell where he worked.

Bates said his daughter was shaken and was staying elsewhere for now to get away from the crime scene.

“We actually have a Ring camera, and you can respond with the Ring app, and she didn't do that,” Bates said. “I guarantee she will from now on.”

Bates said he feels like what happened in his home was an attack, but he is grateful for the quick action of his neighbor, who called 911, and the response of the Houston Police Department.
