2 dead, 2 injured in shooting in Academy/Sherman Park neighborhood in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS (First Alert 4) – Two people died and two others were injured in a shooting in St. Louis City Wednesday afternoon.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (SLMPD) said officers were called to a shooting in the 5000 block of Kensington in the Academy/Sherman Park neighborhood around 4:50 p.m.

According to police, two victims died in the shooting, a man and a 21-year-old woman.

“When officers arrived, they found two people who had been shot. After arriving at the scene and rendering aid, they were notified by the hospital of two additional shooting victims who had shown up there,” said Mitch McCoy, director of SLMPD's Public Affairs and Information Division.

According to police, two men were injured; one of them is in critical, unstable condition and the other man was shot in the arm.

According to police, officers arrived on scene two minutes after the first call. An off-duty firefighter had previously provided assistance, McCoy said.

“An absolute hero for providing assistance here tonight and trying to save individual lives,” McCoy said.

First Alert 4 teams discovered at least 40 evidence markers throughout Kensington Avenue.

“So this is an area that the city has been very focused on in the neighborhood,” said Captain Christi Marks of the SLMPD.

According to Captain Marks, the area around the crime scene is known for drugs and crime. Real-time surveillance cameras are installed nearby.

The homicide squad was tasked with the investigation.

According to police, a weapon and cash were on site.

“We investigate the crime scene, we look for evidence, but it's a partnership. If we're going to put bad people behind bars and hold them accountable, we need the whole community,” McCoy said.
