Murder charge for shooting of COC student

A suspect in the shooting death of a 19-year-old College of the Canyons student faces murder and attempted murder charges and is scheduled for a sentencing hearing next month, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said.

Gavin Orozco-Unzueta, 19, who attended high school in the San Fernando Valley, was shot and killed in a two-car shooting in Granada Hills around 12:55 a.m. on May 1.

The indictment against Grigor Hovsepyan, a 23-year-old man whose location was not immediately known, names two other alleged victims of attempted murder who were in the car with Orozco-Unzueta. The Signal has decided not to publish the names of the other two alleged victims named in the indictment.

After the shooting in the 17500 block of Rinaldi Street, Orozco-Unzueta was transported by Los Angeles Fire Department personnel to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Lead investigator and homicide detective Mark O'Donnell of the Los Angeles Police Department was not immediately available for comment Wednesday.

The charges against Hovsepyan include several violations of court rules as well as special allegations related to the use of a firearm that could result in a life sentence if convicted, prosecutors' documents show.

Hovsepyan's next step would be a preliminary hearing, where the evidence against Hovsepyan will be presented and a judge will decide whether the evidence is sufficient to proceed with the trial.

Hovsepyan is being held at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in downtown Los Angeles and is being held on bail of over $5 million.
