Two Battle Creek people killed in wrong-way crash in Washtenaw County, state troopers say

Three people, including a driver and a passenger from Battle Creek, were killed in a head-on collision in Washtenaw County Wednesday morning, the Michigan State Police First District said.

The accident occurred on the M-14 eastbound ramp near Gotfredson Road at approximately 7:18 a.m.

According to an investigation, a 31-year-old driver and his 27-year-old passenger, both of Battle Creek, were allegedly driving the wrong way on M-14 and exited the highway via an on-ramp.

They then collided head-on with a 2020 Tesla that was trying to get onto the highway, police said.

Both the driver and passenger from Battle Creek and the 53-year-old driver of the Tesla from Munith, Michigan, died in the crash, state police said.

The accident also caused the Tesla to catch fire, but the fire was extinguished by the local fire department.

As of Wednesday afternoon, it was not known whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident, officials said.

The names of the victims have not been released pending notification of their families.
