Man receives medical treatment and awaits arrest after shooting near Charlotte-Sarasota County border

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (WWSB) – A suspect is receiving medical treatment and awaiting arrest following a shooting near the Charlotte-Sarasota county line.

On Wednesday morning, the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office responded to the area of ​​1540 Chancellor Boulevard near the Charlotte County-Sarasota County line after receiving a call about shots fired. When officers arrived, they quickly determined that the disturbance involved two people and gunfire was being exchanged.

The victim was found at the scene with injuries from the shooting. The suspect fled the scene on foot. With the assistance of the North Port Police Department, an immediate search for the suspect was launched.

The suspect, identified as Anthony Gooden, was quickly found and also sustained injuries sustained in the shooting.

Both people were taken to hospital for medical treatment.

Through investigation, investigators concluded that this was an isolated incident between the two individuals and that there was no danger to the public. An arrest warrant was issued against Gooden on the following charges:

  • Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, second degree felony (x2)
  • Discharge of a firearm in public, first degree misdemeanor
  • Grand theft of a weapon, third degree felony
  • Shooting at/into or into a dwelling/building, second degree felony
