India vs Bangladesh: Who is Hasan Mahmud – the young Bangladeshi pacer who dismissed Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in Chennai

Bangladesh cricket team's fast bowler Hasan Mahmud was in superb form as he removed Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli on Day 1 of the first Test match against India in Chennai on Thursday. The bowlers received some support in the first session and Mahmud took full advantage of it. The fast bowler struck first in the fifth over of the match when Rohit hit the ball straight to Najmul Hossain Shanto at second slip. Two overs later, he struck again when Gill chased a ball outside leg-stump and was caught behind the stumps. Mahmud's golden run continued as he took the wicket of Kohli as India's star batter was caught by Litton Das for just 6.

The 24-year-old fast bowler has impressed fans and pundits alike since making his international debut in March 2020. Mahmud played primarily in white-ball cricket for Bangladesh before finally making his Test debut against Sri Lanka in early 2024.

Mahmud was an instant success, taking his first five-wicket haul in the second Test match against Pakistan. He played a major role in Bangladesh winning the Test series 2-0.

Before the Chennai Test, he had 14 wickets in three Test matches at an average of 25. He also has 30 wickets in ODIs and 18 wickets in T20I cricket.

India started the match at 88-3. At the break, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was at bat on 37 and returning wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant was at bat on 33.

India's openers started cautiously and captain Rohit Sharma got his first run off the eleventh delivery after surviving some close calls.

Rohit hit Hasan for the first boundary of the match, but the bowler took revenge in the next over when he caught the skipper at second slip and allowed him to break through.

Rohit made six.

Shubman Gill survived only eight deliveries before he was caught behind while attempting to hit the ball down the leg side and remained without a loss.

Kohli scored the first goal with a single to loud cheers from the crowd.

But the noise soon died down when the former captain hit a long ball outside the off-stump from Hasan to wicket-keeper Litton Das.

It was a disappointing first appearance for Kohli, who scored six goals on his return to the Test team after missing his team's 4-1 home win over England in March.

With three wickets in the first hour, India slipped to 34-3.

Pant, who played his first Test in 2022 after a near-fatal car accident, then held his own with fellow left-hander Jaiswal, scoring 54 runs.
