Four EPISD students hospitalized after pedestrian accident in downtown South El Paso

Four students from Jefferson Silva High School were hospitalized on Wednesday after a pedestrian accident at the corner of E. Paisano St. and Val Verde in downtown South El Paso.

According to an El Paso Fire Department spokesman, a group of people were struck by a vehicle at the corner of E. Paisano St. and Val Verde around 10:20 a.m. Wednesday.

According to reports, three people were taken to hospital with moderate injuries, while another person suffered serious injuries.

Students at Jefferson Silva High School were shocked by the incident.

“I've never seen anything like this, it's crazy. It's really crazy,” said Gisele Valdes.

“Honestly, it was pretty sad,” said Cesar Cabrera. “I feel sorry for the people who are in the hospital right now. I hope she's OK.”

“Everyone is on their phones telling each other, 'Some girls got hit, someone got trapped under the car.' It's just shocking,” said Danika, a student who declined to give her last name.

In a statement, EPISD said:

It is with deep sadness that we announce that today, September 18, 2024, a car accident in front of Jefferson Silva High School resulted in injuries to four of our students.

We are working closely with local law enforcement who are conducting a thorough investigation. Our thoughts and prayers are with the students and families during this incredibly difficult time and ask that their privacy be respected.

El Paso police said their special traffic investigation unit arrived at the scene of the accident.

Danika said traffic near the school is an ongoing problem.

“I've been here for a while and a few times I went for a walk with my friends. When we started walking, the traffic light was always red, but the cars drove anyway. They didn't care. They were speeding. And a few times cars swerved to avoid children and almost ran into them. It's very scary because it happens a lot.”

This is a developing story. Check back later for updates.
