Rumours say Google and Facebook meetings are intended to influence the Vietnamese party leader's US agenda

VietnamThe president and head of the ruling Communist Party, To Lam, will visit the United States next week, said two people briefed on the plans.

Meta's Facebook has one of the world's largest user bases in the country of 100 million people, and Google has its smartphones manufactured there through suppliers and plans to build a major data center there, according to reports last month.

On his first trip to the United States since his appointment as party chief, the most powerful office in the country, in early August, Lam met with representatives of Google And Metathe two people said, with one of them noting that each of the companies will have a separate meeting with him. Neither said what would be discussed.

Two other people familiar with the plans said Lam will also attend an economic forum with other U.S. business officials on Monday.

All four sources declined to remain anonymous because the information is not public.
