Camp Hill man arrested after threatening VA hospital in Central Alabama

A Tallapoosa County man was arrested Wednesday for making a threatening phone call to the Central Alabama Veterans Medical Center in Montgomery, which led to the facility's closure.

The Alabama Department of Law Enforcement said the center received the call through a crisis hotline around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Special agents from ALEA's State Bureau of Investigation immediately intervened to assist in the arrest and search for the suspect, the agency said in a written statement.

Further investigation led to the arrest of 61-year-old Michael Barnett at his home in Camp Hill.

He is accused of making terrorist threats and raising false alarms in a hospital.

Barnett was booked into the Montgomery County Jail on $18,000 bail and was still in jail Thursday morning, according to online records.

In a statement, the city of Montgomery said Wednesday that no one was injured and that city police were assisting with the investigation.

The results will be forwarded to the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office.
