Teenager arrested after threatening Medina Valley on social media

A post from the Medina County Sheriff's Office confirmed that an arrest had been made.

MEDINA COUNTY, Texas – A juvenile offender was arrested in Medina County after officials investigated social media posts involving Medina Valley schools, according to MCSO.

In a letter sent to Medina Valley ISD parents on Tuesday, the superintendent said, “Our administration has been informed of rumors that there may be a school shooting on Wednesday, September 18th. [the next day] circulating on social media and among students on our school district campuses. Administration has investigated and determined there is no credible threat to any of our campuses. Based on our investigation in conjunction with the Texas Fusion Center, we believe these rumors are the result of a hoax circulating statewide that includes a list of “school shootings” that includes our district. Out of an abundance of caution, there will be additional police presence in our district tomorrow. [Wednesday].”

On Wednesday, the principal of Medina Valley Middle School sent a letter to parents stating that three rumors were false: students were arrested on campus, a gun was found on campus and drugs were found on campus. All of these rumors were determined to be false by the principal.

The Medina County Sheriff's Office confirmed in a Facebook post Wednesday that it is “actively investigating social media posts involving Medina Valley Schools.” It also said, “At this time, they have NOT determined the social media chatter to be a credible source.”

Three hours later, at 12:22 a.m. Thursday, Sheriff Randy Brown commented on the post to say that an unnamed juvenile was in custody in connection with this investigation. The post was later updated to confirm that an arrest had been made.
