Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir's heartfelt gesture for Ravichandran Ashwin's century against Bangladesh. Watch

The defensive performance of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja rescued India in the first innings of the first Test against Bangladesh. Both the all-rounders were unbeaten at the end of the first day's play at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. At the end of the first day, Team India were 339 for 6 with Ashwin (102 not out) and Jadeja (86 not out) looking strong after an unbeaten partnership of 195 runs. Bangladesh could not sustain their momentum after picking up six wickets in the first two sessions of the day and conceded 163 runs in the third session without making a breakthrough.

When Ashwin came to bat in the 43rd over, he quickly hit a few boundaries to escape the pressure. Jadeja helped the 38-year-old as the two developed a solid partnership. Jadeja also had a good strike rate and the Bangladeshi bowlers could not withstand the pressure.

India crossed the 300-run mark in the 73rd over after facing 439 balls. Ashwin's sixth Test hundred came in the 78th over. It was also his second hundred on his home ground.

The entire dressing room, including players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and head coach Gautam Gambhir, stood up to celebrate the century.

In the first two sessions of the day, the hosts struggled and lost wickets quickly. Yashasvi Jaiswal's fifty helped to stabilise the innings somewhat, scoring 56 from 118 deliveries.

At teatime, India with Ravindra Jadeja (7*) and Ravichandran Ashwin (21*) were at 176 for 6.

The post-lunch session continued from 88/3 with Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant in bat. Pant was dismissed on 39 by Hasan Mahmud and it was his fourth wicket.

KL Rahul came to bat and scored 16 and was dismissed by Mehidy Hasan Miraz at 144. At the same score, Jaiswal was dismissed after scoring 56, which he scored with the help of nine boundaries. After Jaiswal's departure, Ashwin joined Jadeja and both built a partnership of 32 at tea.

Apart from Mahmud, Nahid Rana and Mehidy Hasan Miraz took one wicket each.

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto won the coin toss and chose to bowl in the first Test of the two-match series that began on Thursday.

Both teams decided to field three seamers each as the cloudy skies promised support for the fast bowlers.

The standout bowler in the first session was Hasan Mahmud of Bangladesh. He exploited the conditions masterfully, taking all three wickets and constantly troubling the Indian batsmen with his movement and precision.

With both captain Rohit Sharma and star batter Virat Kohli dismissed cheaply for six runs each, Rohit and Jaiswal opened the Indian innings and by the end of the first session the hosts were 88 for 3. Jaiswal, unbeaten on 37, and Pant, not out on 33, were at bat, having righted the ship after the early setbacks.
