Lawsuit filed in 2022 SC rollover school bus accident that injured 8

The lawsuit accuses the district of inadequately training the driver, who was cited for speeding on an unpaved road.

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, SC – The father of a Chesterfield County student who was injured when a school bus overturned in 2022 filed a lawsuit against the school district and the bus driver.

The accident occurred on McCaskill Road in August 2022. South Carolina police accused the driver of speeding on a dirt road, causing the bus to roll over when he lost control. The Chesterfield County School District said eight of the 24 students on the bus were taken to the hospital.

“The next thing we heard was 'boom' and then we all fell to the ground,” said one student. “We ran to get through the exits.”

The lawsuit alleges that the driver, identified as Jessica Johnson, was driving the bus “negligently and recklessly” when the accident occurred. The lawsuit also accuses the school district of failing to adequately train Johnson before allowing her to ride with students. The lawsuit asks a jury to award damages for medical expenses, pain and suffering, and other compensatory damages.
