Man allegedly shot father who intervened in argument with his daughter, police say

Authorities say a man is accused of shooting a father who tried to break up a fight involving his daughter on a school bus.

Kentarian Cross, 22, of Florida City, turned himself in to police Wednesday after allegedly shooting 47-year-old Johnny Lewis Stevenson on Tuesday, police said. Stevenson was involved in a fight involving several Homestead High girls, including his daughter, when Cross fired the fatal shot, Miami-Dade police said.

When police arrived at the scene around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, neither Stevenson nor Cross were there. A short time later, Stevenson, who police said lived in Florida City, arrived at Baptist Homestead Hospital before being flown by helicopter to Jackson South Medical Center. There, he died during surgery, police said.

According to police reports, the incident was captured on a cellphone camera and shared on social media. The video shows a group of girls fighting on a school bus before escalating into a brawl with a large crowd in a residential neighborhood in Florida City. Shortly afterward, gunshots are heard and Stevenson falls to the ground, the video shows.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools said they were aware of the video clip showing students fighting at Homestead Senior High School and that “the students involved will be disciplined in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct,” it said in an email to the Herald.

The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner's Office concluded that Stevenson died of a gunshot wound to the upper body, police said.

Cross is being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. He is charged with one count of first-degree murder with a firearm.
