SACRAMENTO – The Sacramento County Sheriff is expected to address the issue of fentanyl and drugs in prisons on Thursday.

Last September, questions mounted after drugs and dangerous contraband ended up at Sacramento County's main jail.

Investigators believe that a medical assistant assigned to the prison abused her position to smuggle items into the prison.

A year later, new details emerged about the death of Smiley Martin, the suspect in the K Street mass murder. He died from a drug for which he did not have a prescription.

Martin died in his jail cell on June 8. The medical examiner says he did not have a prescription for methadone, the drug that killed him. It is unclear where Martin got it, but the autopsy report says he did not have a prescription and did not even mention taking the drug previously.

Martin's death was the third in prison this month.

Sheriff Jim Cooper is expected to speak at 10 a.m.
