1 swimmer dead, 1 missing

PHOENIX – One person is dead and another is missing after a drowning accident in the Salt River Wednesday night, authorities said.

According to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office (MCSO), officers responded to a 911 call of a drowning at Sheep's Crossing Recreation Area around 5:40 p.m.

Witnesses reported seeing two swimmers in distress who did not resurface after submerging.

When officers arrived, Good Samaritans were performing CPR on an adult male victim on the shore.

Officers took over CPR efforts until paramedics arrived and provided advanced medical care, but the man, whose identity was not released, could not be revived.

What happened to the second swimmer in the Salt River drowning accident?

The MCSO searched the area on the ground and by air but was unable to locate the other swimmer. The search will continue Thursday morning, the MCSO said.

Sheep's Crossing Recreation Area is located on the Salt River, about 36 miles northeast of downtown Phoenix, just north of the Bush Highway in the Tonto National Forest.

It was the second fatal incident at a recreational facility in Maricopa County in less than a week.

Byron Garcia-Perez, 25, drowned while swimming in Lake Pleasant on Sunday afternoon. His body was recovered shortly before midnight.
