Video of domestic violence incident involving former Dodgers pitcher surfaced

Julio Urías fell from the top of the baseball universe to the absolute bottom.

In October 2020, Urías recorded the final out that gave the Los Angeles Dodgers their first World Series title since 1988. Over the next three years, the left-handed pitcher enjoyed the glory of having the clip played over and over again in a championship-hungry city where the Mexican-born pitcher had become a cult hero.

Urías, 28, has not pitched since he was placed on leave from Major League Baseball in September 2023 when he was accused of assaulting his wife outside a soccer game in Los Angeles.

Now a video of the incident has surfaced that shows exactly why no team has signed Urías since he became a free agent last year.

The Los Angeles Times published a 72-second clip from the California Highway Patrol investigating the September 3, 2023, incident. In it, Urías can be seen chasing two women outside BMO Stadium, where he and his wife were attending an LAFC soccer game. Then, while being physically restrained by a man in civilian clothes, Urías strikes the two women with his left hand.

According to the Times, the CHP report lists Urías and his wife as the only two “people involved.”

After the incident, the Dodgers removed Urías' locker from Dodger Stadium and virtually severed all ties to the pitcher.

In May, Urías pleaded no contest to a domestic violence charge and was sentenced to 36 months probation and 30 days of community service. He became a free agent after last season and has yet to find a new team, in the U.S. or elsewhere.

If he is interested in reinstatement, Urías would likely be the second player ever disciplined twice under baseball's common domestic violence policy.

According to a league spokesman quoted anonymously in the Times report, “MLB continues to collect all relevant evidence as part of its investigation.”

Urias pitched in 158 games from 2016-2023, all for the Dodgers after being signed as an amateur out of Culíacan, Mexico. He went 60-25 in the regular season and led Los Angeles to the postseason highlight.

Urías pitched in 23 postseason games for the Dodgers from 2016 to 2022. He helped the Dodgers win the 2020 World Series by getting the last out in the ninth inning of Game 6 to defeat the Tampa Bay Rays.

In 2021, the left-hander led the National League in wins (20). The following year, he led the NL earned run average (2.16). Urías collected votes for the Cy Young Award every year.
