System of a Down fans name the band's most underrated songs on Reddit

Fans of System of a Down have named what they believe to be the band’s most underrated songs in a post on Reddit.

The rockers released a total of five studio albums between 1998 and 2005, but they have not released any new material since the release of the two standalone tracks “Genocidal Humanoidz” and “Protect the Land” in November 2020.

Someone asked fellow System of a Down fans on Reddit which song they thought was the most underrated, so we've posted the five most upvoted answers below.

“Nap”

“Shimmy” is the eleventh track on the album Toxicity, and has only been performed live by the band five times in total, according to Setlist.fm. The comment suggesting this song received the most upvotes in the thread.

A funny comment from another fan reads: “A personal story about this song that no one asked me about: A few days ago I discovered that I can set my phone alarm to play a random song from a playlist on Spotify. Until one day I woke up to the song 'Shimmy' and I could swear it was Serj. [Tankian] personally and said to me, 'Don't be late for school again, boy.'”

“Streamline”

“Streamline” also received a considerable number of upvotes compared to the rest of the song suggestions in the post. It is from 2002 Steal this album!, and was played live a total of 12 times.

“ADD (Denial of the American Dream)”

Another selection from Steal this album! The song that made it into the thread was “ADD (American Dream Denial),” which appeared on the band’s setlist 20 times, according to Setlist.fm.

The person who suggested this title also noted that they all Steal this album! is underrated compared to the rest of their discography, and another fan echoed this sentiment in a separate comment further down the thread.

“Dream”

The most voted selection from the album Hypnotize The suggested song was “Dreaming,” and the Reddit user who wrote the post called it one of his favorite SOAD songs.

“Ego Brain”

“Ego Brain” is also from the record Steal this album! Seven other people in the thread picked it and they seemed to have more to say about this track than some of the others.

“This song is not only beautiful and somehow unique to her, but also musically very demanding and the harmonies of Serj and Daron [Malakian] are masterclass. I just heard the isolated vocals the other day and holy shit it was a treat,” one person wrote.

However, someone else admitted that he didn't like the song. Steal this album!

“I think the reason 'Ego Brain' is one of my least favorite SOAD songs is because of its placement on the album (maybe even the album itself it's on). When I jam to StA, it just gets me going. On its own, the song is great. In the entirety of the album and listening to it, it's a real speed bump for my supple brain,” they explained.
