James W. Bond, 52, was commander of the Gary Police Department this summer.

According to court documents, the minor, whose name was not disclosed, was working for the city as part of the youth summer employment program.

The minor was assigned to work with the Gary Police Department.

During his recordings from July 2 to 9, Bond is said to have enticed the minor into “sexually explicit conduct.”

The summer program employs Gary residents between the ages of 14 and 22. It is unknown how old the victim in this case is.

The former commander is facing federal charges of sexual exploitation of minors and receipt and possession of child pornography. He was arrested on Thursday morning.

His first court date is scheduled for Thursday at 2 p.m.

“Upon learning of these allegations, swift action was taken to ensure the safety of our employees and the officer in question was immediately removed from office,” said Gary Police Chief Derrick Cannon.

It is not known when the commander was relieved of his position at the Gary Police Department.

“Let me be clear: actions such as those alleged in the indictment will not be tolerated in our community, especially within our agency,” added Chief Cannon.

The Department of Homeland Security is involved in the investigation and is asking any suspected victims to call 1-877-4-HSI-TIP.
