The Massachusetts Turnpike was blocked westbound in the Hopkinton/Westborough area by an overturned truck on Thursday, authorities said, and the closure is expected to last throughout rush hour.

The incident occurred at mile marker 106, according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. They said traffic is being diverted via Route 9, exit 111, and the westbound side of the highway is expected to remain closed during the evening rush hour.

“Drivers traveling through the affected areas should avoid the area, expect delays, reduce speed and use caution,” MassDOT said in a statement.

According to the Westborough Fire Department, the accident near I-495 resulted in injuries and spillage of hazardous materials. The fire department released pictures from the scene of the accident, which also show a truck lying across the road.

They did not provide any information about the severity of the injuries.

Fire officials said a fuel leak that caused the crash had been contained and the truck was moved to one side of the highway so traffic could continue. They expected traffic to resume flowing around 3:50 p.m.

Behind the accident site, traffic came to a standstill.
