Jefferson Parish man convicted of murdering Avondale man

A Jefferson Parish man accused of escaping from a deputy sheriff's custody was convicted of murder Wednesday night. Leon Ruffins was found guilty of murdering Gannon Johnson. Ruffins will appear in court next month for escaping from custody in Jefferson Parish in February after pepper-spraying a deputy and stealing her car. He was later found at a New Orleans East hotel. Ruffins was convicted of second-degree murder, felony use of a firearm, aggravated assault, aggravated property damage and obstruction of justice. He will be sentenced on October 24.

A Jefferson Parish man accused of escaping from a deputy sheriff's custody was convicted of murder Wednesday night.

Leon Ruffins was found guilty of the murder of Gannon Johnson.

Ruffins is due in court next month for escaping from Jefferson Parish custody in February after pepper-spraying a deputy and taking her car.

He was later found in a hotel in eastern New Orleans.

Ruffins was convicted of first-degree murder, felony battery, aggravated assault, serious damage to property, and obstruction of justice.

His verdict will be announced on October 24.
