Monaco – Barcelona 2:1: George Ilenikhena scores and Barca loses in the Champions League

Nigerian striker George Ilenikhena scored on his Champions League debut and Monaco caused an upset against ten-man Barcelona.

The 18-year-old substitute ran over the entire defence after Vanderson's long ball in the 71st minute and fired the ball past Marc-André ter Stegen into the goal.

Eric Garcia had already been shown the red card after ten minutes when he fouled Takumi Minamino as the last man from behind after a bad pass from ter Stegen.

Monaco took the lead shortly afterwards when Maghnes Akliouche pushed the ball past ter Stegen, who stood rooted to the spot on the penalty spot.

Barcelona's own teenage star Lamine Yamal equalised with his first Champions League goal when he collected a long ball, cut inside and fired the ball low into the bottom corner.

But Ilenikhena's goal, his first since joining from Royal Antwerp in the summer, condemned Barcelona to an opening defeat.

It could have been a more convincing victory, but a penalty from Folarin Balogun was cancelled in the closing stages following a video assistant referee (VAR) review after it was ruled that he had gone down too lightly in a tackle by Inigo Martinez.
