14-year-old arrested after finding discarded pistol

PEORIA (25News Now) – A teenager was arrested after police found a discarded handgun with an empty magazine.

Peoria police said a group of men were seen gathering in the 800 block of West McBean Street in Peoria around 4:20 p.m. Wednesday.

A 14-year-old boy walked away as officers approached and was taken into custody at Martin Luther King Jr. Park in Peoria.

During the search for the boy's flight route, a pistol with an extended magazine was found.

The pistol was also reported stolen.

The boy was arrested on preliminary charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, no FOID, possession of a stolen handgun, and possession of a handgun under the age of 21.

He was taken to the juvenile detention center.
