Man arrested after police chase and motorcycle accident in Iosco County

IOSCO CO., Michigan (WNEM) – The Tawas City Police Department said a man was arrested following a chase that resulted in a crash on Thursday, Sept. 19.

Police said Iosco County 911 received a report shortly after 2 a.m. Thursday of a motorcyclist suspected of being involved in a sexual assault case reported earlier that evening.

The person who reported the crime provided a description of a motorcycle seen leaving a Speedway gas station in Oscoda Township, police said.

Police attempted to stop the motorcycle but were unable to identify the license plate. When they activated the hazard lights, the motorcyclist sped away on US-23, according to police, leading to a chase into Baldwin Township.

Officers lost sight of the motorcycle, but a Tawas City officer spotted it shortly thereafter traveling west on Lincoln Street in Baldwin Township. Police said the officer attempted to make a traffic stop, but the motorcyclist maneuvered around the police car and fled.

Tawas City Police pursued the motorcycle from a distance until they lost sight of it again on Monument Road approaching Wilber Road. When officers arrived at that intersection, they found the motorcyclist had crashed. Police said the 22-year-old East Tawas driver was standing next to his motorcycle with his hands raised.

According to police, it has been determined that he is not the suspect from the previous CSC report.

He was hospitalized and, upon release, transferred to the Iosco County Jail, where charges are pending.

According to police, preliminary investigations indicate that the man failed to negotiate a curve on Monument Road, which is why he crashed into a sign that read “Sharp Curve” and had an accident.
