Run for Recovery helps educate the public about drug overdoses

CARTHAGE, N.Y. (WWNY) – Five years ago, on September 22, Amber Yancey lost her son.

“Not a day goes by that I don't think about my son, so talking about him makes me happy, not sad,” Amber Yancey said.

Keegan Willis, 25, was one of a growing number of Americans who fell victim to a fentanyl overdose. Since then, his mother has honored him every year on the anniversary of his death with a 5K run and a 5K recovery walk.

It is a reminder that those who suffer are never alone.

“Lots of hugs, tears and also that fire of wanting to do something. It ignites a spark inside you that makes you want to do something and make a change,” Yancey said.

The event, which takes participants on a walking tour of the village of Carthage, raises an average of about $2,000 each year in donations alone.

The money will benefit prevention and rehabilitation services in the region. It is also an opportunity to convey hope.

“They need other people around them who care about them. That's the hope. Share the hope. That's my message,” Yancey said.

The event begins on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Carthage Park. Registration is free.
