Shohei Ohtani is one home run away from becoming the first 50-50 player in baseball history. The Los Angeles Dodgers star hit his 49th home run and stole his 50th (and 51st) base of the season against the Miami Marlins on Thursday afternoon (GameTracker). The Dodgers have nine games left while Ohtani is moving toward 50-50.

Here is Ohtani's 49th home run and 50th stolen base:

On Thursday, Ohtani hit a home run for the 13th time this season and stole a base in the same game, tying the single-season record set by Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson in 1986.

Assuming Ohtani goes 50-50, he would be only the third player in baseball history to have a 50-home run and 50-steal season at any point in his career, let alone a season in the same one. Barry Bonds (73 home runs in 2001 and 52 steals in 1990) and Brady Anderson (50 home runs in 1996 and 53 steals in 1992) are the other two.

It is worth noting that the 49 home runs are the Dodgers' franchise record. Here is the ranking:

  1. Shohei Ohtani, 2024: 49 (and counting)
  2. Shawn Green, 2001: 49
  3. Adrian Beltre, 2004: 48
  4. Cody Bellinger, 2019: 47
  5. Several tied with 43

The 50 stolen bases aren't particularly close to the franchise record. Maury Wills is the Dodgers' all-time leader with 104 steals in 104 games. Our RJ Anderson recently analyzed Ohtani’s base-stealing skillsa new feature he added this season.

Overall, Ohtani entered Thursday with a slash line of .287/.371/.607 and led the league in runs (119), RBI (110) and total bases (360), in addition to home runs and other stats. Ohtani, a two-time MVP, is not pitching this season as he completes his rehab after elbow surgery last September.
