Ketchikan murder case to be covered in an episode of 20/20 | Homepage

It's always fascinating to watch a show about a murder case, but it's even more interesting when an episode is set in your community. Ketchikan is the focus of the “20/20” episode that airs Friday. It's about the murder of Dr. Eric Garcia, a Ketchikan surgeon who was murdered by Jordan Joplin in 2017. I won't give too much away, but there's romance, theft, and of course, murder.

Mayor David Kiffer, who was on the city council at the time, recalled hearing about the case when it first came to light, saying, “I think there was a great deal of surprise and shock. Dr. Garcia was very popular in the community.”

The episode will bring some attention and curiosity to the community.

“We are very interested. We are excited to see how it will be portrayed. And we hope to learn more about this situation that shocked us so much,” said Mayor Kiffer.

Assistant Attorney General Erin McCarthy worked on the case and recognized Dr. Garcia's importance within the community.

“It was abundantly clear to us as prosecutors that his loss had a tremendous impact on the community and was felt deeply by many people,” she said.

Mrs. McCarthy will actually be in the episode and had a lot of fun.

“Everyone who has come here is a very nice person and it has been a pleasure working with them. But when we actually watch it, I think we will all be very nervous.”

The 20/20 episode airs Friday at 8 p.m. Alaska time on ABC, so tune in and don't miss the show.
