MLB odds 2024: Can Shohei Ohtani record his first 50/50 season in the MLB?

Making history always seems far-fetched… until someone is about to do it.

On August 23, Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani stole his 40th base of the season against the Tampa Bay Rays before hitting his 40th home run of the year in the bottom of the ninth inning, a walk-off grand slam that gave LA the win and catapulted Ohtani into the MLB record books.

With this feat, he became the sixth player in league history to record at least 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases in a single season – in short, he became a member of the 40/40 club.

But for Ohtani, there seems to be (potentially) even more history in sight.

Is it possible that he could be the first member of the 50/50 club?

Ohtani has played in 149 games this year and currently has 48 home runs and 49 stolen bases, meaning he can hit two home runs and steal a base in 13 games.

Let's look at the odds that Ohtani will become the league's first 50/50 pick on September 18 at FanDuel Sportsbook:

Ohtani will hit more than 50 home runs and record more than 50 stolen bases in the 2024 regular season:

Yes: -480 (bet $10 to win $12.08 total)
No: +330 (bet $10 to win $43 total)

Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers hits his 48th home run of the season

The six members of the 40/40 Club are Jose Canseco (A's, 1988), Barry Bonds (Giants, 1996), Alex Rodriguez (Mariners, 1998), Alfonso Soriano (Nationals, 2006), Ronald Acuna Jr. (Braves, 2023) and Ohtani.

However, Ohtani accomplished this feat in 21 fewer games than any other member of the club.

Ohtani is also the first player in league history to record 47 home runs and 48 stolen bases. Rodriguez stole 46 bases and 42 home runs, Soriano hit 46 home runs and 41 stolen bases, and Acuna stole 73 bases and 41 home runs, but none reached 45/45.
