Investigations into the Elba murder case are ongoing

ELBA, Alabama (WTVY) – A homicide investigation is underway in Coffee County following an incident this afternoon.

Coffee County Coroner Arnold Woodham and later Elba Police Lt. Russ Young confirmed the investigation to News4, saying it took place around 3 p.m. when police first received reports of a possible suicide at a home on Caroline Street.

When police arrived on the scene, they found the body of 54-year-old Steve Magwood. Magwood was suffering from numerous stab wounds when police discovered him.

Based on immediate findings on the scene, police arrested 49-year-old Deloris Smith, who was charged with murder. According to jail records, she was also charged with harassment.

Smith was taken to the Coffee County Jail, where she is currently being held.
