Insider warns New England Patriots against using Drake Maye

New England Patriots fans are clamoring for the team to play rookie quarterback Drake Maye, but that may be too much for them.

Karen Guregian of MassLive.com published an article explaining why it would be dangerous for the Patriots to put Maye on the field at this point, pointing out how abysmal New England's offensive line has been so far.

Jacoby Brissett was the Pats' quarterback for the first two weeks of the 2024 NFL season, and although he was only sacked four times, he was pressured on nearly 50 percent of his throws, according to Guregian.

Essentially, Brissett's mobility is the reason he avoids sacks more than anything else and takes an awful lot of hits early in the season.

Patriots fans only have to look at Mac Jones to understand what can happen to a young quarterback who gets lost behind a leaky offensive line. If New England chooses Maye now, the same could happen to its coveted draft pick.

The Pats' offensive line was widely considered one of the worst in the league entering the year, so the unit's struggles should come as no surprise. That's one of the main reasons head coach Jerod Mayo chose the experienced Brissett.

The Patriots' pass offense currently ranks 29th in the NFL, and while that's certainly largely due to New England's lack of weapons in the air attack, poor blocking on offense is also a reason for that.

Maye will almost certainly play at some point this season, but asking the first-year playmaker to step on the field now would be like throwing him to the wolves.

All in all, Pats fans should be extremely patient with Maye.
