Bail revoked for man accused of breaking Pittsburgh police officer's leg during South Side brawl

The man who allegedly broke a police officer's leg in Pittsburgh is back behind bars. A judge revoked his bail on Thursday.

Both the district attorney's office and the police chief were upset that the man accused of assaulting the police officer was allowed to post 10% of $10,000, just $1,000 in cash, and then walk out of jail.

Therefore, they asked a judge to intervene and review the case.

Jonathan Morin is accused of attacking a Pittsburgh police officer earlier this month as he tried to break up a fight at a South Side bar.

Sergeant Andrew Robinson broke his leg and ankle while trying to break up the fight.

Morin was charged with aggravated assault, but a district judge agreed to release him on $10,000 bail.

This drew sharp criticism from Pittsburgh Police Chief Larry Scirotto.

“I know men and women who sacrifice a lot for this city and for the safety of the community. They don't deserve it and should never be treated as expendable,” Scirotto said.

Scirotto told lead investigator Rick Earle that he called the district judge who set the bail. He says the judge told him he made a mistake in reviewing the case.

“One thing is certain: I will challenge the justice system and the people who live in it if it serves the safety of my officers, whether they like it or not, but I will do the right thing,” Scirotto said.

Meanwhile, District Attorney Stephen Zappala filed a motion for a bail modification hearing.

At Thursday's hearing at the Allegheny County Courthouse, the officer testified about his injuries.

Morin's lawyer says he never intended to hurt the police officer, but was only trying to help his brother.

After hearing the evidence, the judge revoked Morin's bail and sent him directly to jail.

Scirotto said in a statement that he was pleased with the judge's decision.

“This was the appropriate outcome for the violent conduct … It shows that the justice system cares about the safety of our officers and that attacks on them will not be tolerated,” Scirotto said.

Morin's lawyer says he will likely appeal the bail decision.

His preliminary hearing was postponed on Wednesday.
